Simple How to Snowboard Instructions
The simple snowboarding tips and instructions below are basic details that you need to know, but for more in-depth information you can easily watch a good how to snowboard video or take a class with a qualified snowboard instructor.
Step 1: The Gear
Find good snowboard equipment
Finding good snowboard equipment is a must. Make sure the quality is good quality and if you decide to buy snowboard gear at a discount price. Check to see if the gear are still in safe conditions.
Put on your headgear securely. It should not move about from the head and stay close to your vision. This is basically the best way it’ll keep you from getting seriously injured. It needs to be tight although not too tight.
Start with a soft snowboard to train your moves and understand your own balance. When you have mastered this type of snowboarding gear, then you can go for a hard board. You should choose a board that is not too short or too wide, but one that is perfect for your weight, size feet and height.
The ideal snowboard should be tall enough to reach your chin and wide enough to prevent your toes or the back of your feet from protruding from it.
Get good snowboard boots. Wear your boots and ensure that they are really tied up as tight as possible. The extra space inside your boots, the more difficult it will likely be to manage your board. Also, put on some long socks too, as it can keep your legs tight, comfortable and warm. Maybe even two if you like.
Your snowboard jacket and pants should be waterproof and allow your skin to breath. To finish your snowboard attire, get sealed water proof gloves and find the best snowboard goggles.
Step 2: Regular or Goofy
Determine your Snowboard Stance
Your snowboard stance is basically the foot that you will use to move forward and step backward with.
It does not necessarily have to be the main foot. Some snowboarders, when they want to know how to snowboard simply do a quick tests with their feet to see how they would react by running forward and stepping backward.
If you stop with your right foot first, then you would probably be goofy foot. If you stop with your left foot first, then you would probably be regular foot. You can do this step before you start to discover how to snowboard. Try not to do any snowboard tricks before you know the stance.
Some resorts actually have a work bench, so if you decide to switch stance use the work bench provided. If you don’t know what your doing and they don’t have a work bench for use, ask the repair shop but most likely they will charge for the labor.
Step 3: How to Stay Up and Lifted
Master Your Bindings
Your bindings are basically what will keep your feet and boots “connected” to the snowboard. Make sure your forward foot is always strapped and have the other foot free to move around.
There are many different boot-binding combinations, know how to use the two strap system quickly. When ready to get on the lift you will be required to have your forward foot strap on and have the snowboard free from the other foot.
Once your ready to get off the lift, you might end up falling like most beginners but that’s okay because most do. When sliding with only your forward foot, heel edge or toes up and it will cause you to slow down and stop. Easy.
Step 4: Have Patience
Start Sliding
Now that your front foot is all strapped in place it is time to start some real action! Make sure your on the bunny slopes/practice slopes first before going further up.
Make small pushes with your back foot until you have mastered your balance and understand your board some more. You can either skate on the front of your snowboard (toe edge) or you can do it on the back (heel edge).
You should try this on the top of the bunny slope until you have mastered basic moves that you need to know how to snowboard. You can move around on flat areas that are free from people and any type of obstacles while you are practicing snowboarding.
Try twisting your hips to help you more to the right or left. Being able to twist and use the toe edge and heel edge will get you to ride. Watch others who are doing it well and copy. Concentrate on keeping your knees bent as it help from stiffing the legs and tiring yourself out. Have patience, eventually you will get it.
Step 5: Practice, Practice, Practice..
Practice Falling
Falling is a natural part of snowboarding and also a very dangerous part. But it should be practiced that way you won’t break a bone. You should keep your fists shut at all times when you are on your snowboard to help cushion the blow to your wrist and fingers.
If you sense you are going to fall on your face, try falling on your forearms and still keep your fists shut. Your knees should be slightly bent to avoid any damages. However, if you fall on your butt, try not to fall on your tailbone since this is very painful and can immobilize you if the fall is considerable.
Still keep your fists shut if you are falling. This really help to keep to prepare for the fall. Remember this sport takes some practice but it is a very fun sport and when you do learn to ride smoothly you will discover the art of how to snowboard.
